Groundswell Ch. 1-3

What is Groundswell? (from the book Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff)

“A social trend in which people use technologies to get the things they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions like corporations.”

It’s interactive. It’s people aware.

It comes from three different kinds of forces: People, technology, and economics.

If you can’t beat them, join them… Digg.com did.

Different types of Groundswells: Blogs, Social networks, Wikis, Foroms, Tags, RSS and Widgets.

Groundswell requires 3 different types of people: Creators, reactors, and readers.

Why do people use Goundswell?

  • Keep up friendships.
  • Make new friends.
  • Succumb to social pressure from existing friends.
  • Pay it forward.
  • Altruistic impulse.
  • Prurient impulse.
  • Creative impulse.
  • Validation impulse.
  • Affinity impulse.
